Are We Related: Willett & Kreamer

Filed under: Are We Related,Box,England,Kreamer,Willett — David @ 8:29 pm

This post is in response to a comment from Eve Thirkle.

I happened across your family tree of Josiah Box and Elizabeth Stiles when researching my Kreamer family line (my father’s line) and was amazed to discover a link to the Willett family (my mother’s line) – still need to see whether it is the same families and where the link occurs if there is one but thank you for publishing the tree.

This post addresses the first relationship – between the Kreamer family and the Willett family (which has been traced back to Colchester, Essex).

It does look as if the Kreamers and the Willets are related via the Box family.

William Willett (senior) the father of William Willett, the advocate of daylight saving, appears to have married a Maria Box in Stepney on 27 January 1856. The parish register for Saint Philip, Stepney (held by the London Metropolitan Archives) shows:

Name: William Willett
Spouse: Maria Box
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 27 Jan 1856
Parish: St Philip, Stepney
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: Everard Willett
Spouse Father: Thomas Henry Box
Register Type: Parish Register

Maria’s parents Thomas Henry Box and Mary Ann Hall seem to have had (at least) 13 children.

The IGI Transcription (Batch P015521) shows for Maria:

MARIA BOX Female
Event(s): Birth: 18 NOV 1820
Christening: 10 DEC 1820 St John Horseleydowns, Bermondsey, London
Parents: Father: THOMAS HENRY BOX Mother: MARY ANN

and (also Batch P015521) shows for her sister Mary Sophia:

MARY SOPHIA BOX Female
Event(s): Birth: 04 MAY 1815
Christening: 28 MAY 1815 St John Horseleydowns, Bermondsey, London
Parents: Father: THOMAS HENRY BOX Mother: MARY ANN

Their eldest child Mary Sophia seems to have married John Kreamer – wedding details as yet unknown. However I am told that the birth certificate of Joseph Robert Kreamer (b 12 Dec 1848) shows his parents as John Kreamer and Mary Sophia Kreamer, formerly Box. All three show up together on the 1851 Census at 4 James Court, Bermondsey, London/Surrey

I believe that John Kreamer is the great (x3) grandfather of Eve Thirkle.

  1. Spot on!

John Thomas Kreamer (c 1816 possibly Kingston upon Thames) married Mary Sophia Box sometime before 1836 – their first child was John Kreamer b c1836 in Horseleydown, Surrey.

Their fourth child was Alfred Kreamer b 26/3/1841 in Fendall Street Bermondsey. He married Emma Marie Powell (
06 Feb 1841 • Rotherhithe)and their 8th child Reuben Samuel Kreamer (01 Oct 1878 • Stepney) was my great grandfather.
