Surname Villett as a variant of Willett

Villett and similar (Villet, Vilette etc.) as a variation of Willett were excluded from my ongoing “Willetts in Essex” analysis. Villett and variants does often appear in discussion of Huguenot Families, and given the suggestion that the Willetts may be of Huguenot origin, it is accepted that research may have to be expanded. This post looks at the distribution of “Villett” and similar in Essex.

In FreeBMD Data

A basic phonetic search on all FreeBMD records in Essex gives 134 records. This gives 36 name variants.

The problem with “phonetic searches” is the possibility of “false matches”, a number of the above do not look like plausible variants of Villett.

If I impose a selection criteria of:

  • Capital V
  • vowel
  • one or two “l”s
  • vowel
  • one or two “t”s, and
  • optionally an “e”

The number can be cut down – see the emboldened rows in the table above.

In Family Search Data

Family Search has a number of Parish and Non-Conformist Records in Essex for “Villett” and variations. A non-exact search on this name returns some very unmatched names such as “Spelles”, “Knelles”, “Hewelless”. After excluding these, duplicates, and records relating to events after the beginning of Civil Registration (which would potentially be double counting those records returned by FreeBMD), we get 17 records. Note that Records for Christenings are indexed as Births in Family Search indices, and Burials are indexed as Deaths.

Conclusion

The above 17 events in the 80 years prior to registration and 44 after registration for Villett and variations compares to about 1000 births for Willett and common variations in Essex in the registration era (say about 130 years of FreeBMD coverage – the coverage is a bit ragged in recent decades as earlier records are transcribed first), which would tend to indicate that Villett and variants are unlikely to distort the analysis of Willett.

However, when reconstructing families we need to be aware that names like Villett before the mid 1700s (i.e. before the Family Search transcriptions) may have been anglicised to “Willett” in the period we have examined.

Mary Faulder married to David Johnston, Blacksmith in Allonby

I received a somewhat brief comment from a researcher who was:

Looking into David Johnston marriage to Mary Faulder. David was Blacksmith 1871 census in Allonby Cumbria

Email comment sent in by Dwight Donaldson 23 April 2022 (UK Time, possibly 22 April in US)

Within my research into “Unlinked Faulders”, I had a number of Mary Faulders who could have been adults around 1871 in the Allonby area of Cumberland.

As so often is the case this did not turn out as straightforward as one might hope.

Williamson: Current Research

Link between myself and the Williamsons
Link between myself and the Williamsons

Currently a number of events have brought my focus back to the Williamson Family – my maternal grandmother’s family (through my mother’s adoption).

The purpose of this post is to summarise the current areas of research and what is being done (September 2021) in order to help others and via search engines to catch the attention of people currently unknown to me who may be researching the same family.

Currently we know of the Williamsons in Cork in the first half of the 19th Century, later emerging in Worcester in England in the 1861 Census. That same census indicates that there was a branch of the family in New Jersey United States.

The Family of James Keighley (1805-1888)

Faulder to Keighley Ancestry

James Keighley was my Great Great Great Grandfather. His daughter Martha (1834-1920) married Robert Fell (1924-1910) and their eldest child, Elizabeth Fell (1856-1929) was the mother of my paternal Grandmother, Marjorie Fell Lendrum (1887-1963).

Reconstructing James’s family or families is of interest not just because he is at the time of writing the most distant Keighley relative but also because of two outstanding genealogical itches:

  • The identity of “Granny’s sister and her bridesmaid” – an elderly woman standing behind Martha Fell in Robert and Martha’s Golden Wedding Photograph at Somerville, Hungerford Road, Huddersfield – the annotation written from the perspective of someone of the same generation as my Grandmother Marjorie Lendrum.

As a “read” it is probably only of interest to Keighley, Fell and Ramsden relatives and those wanting to find out a bit more about the two posts referenced in the paragraphs above.

Are We Related: George Willett (1. b ~1862 at Whitechapel)

This post, and its pair, is in response to a comment about a possible relationship between the Willetts (from Colchester – “my ancestors”, as researched elsewhere on this website) and a line of Willetts in the East End of London. The key link seems to be a George Willett born around 1862 or 1863.

This post examines how I am related to this George Willett. A second post looks at the other line.

Are We Related: George Willett (2. b ~1862 at Henham)

This post, and its pair, is in response to a comment about a possible relationship between the Willetts (from Colchester – “my ancestors” as researched elsewhere on this website) and a line of Willetts in the East End of London identified by Lee Willett. The key link seems to be a George Willett born around 1862 or 1863. Branches of the Colchester Willetts migrated to the East End.

The first post revalidated how I am related to the George Willett born in Whitechapel – a descendant of Everard Willett of Colchester. This post examines how Lee’s ancestors may be related to this George Willett.

William Blizard Williamson of Cork

One of my brick walls has been William Blizard Williamson and his family;

  • His wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and
  • His sons William Blizard and George Henry.

George Henry was the father of Elizabeth Ann Willett who with her husband Everard William Willett adopted my mother, which makes William Blizard Williamson (senior) my Great Great Grandfather (by adoption).

This posts summarises what is and is not known about this family and what can be done to break down this brick wall! Essentially we know little about their Irish life or of their ancestors in Ireland.

(It was initially published on 24 December 2016 and updated 1 April 2018 and 3 August 2021.)

Identifying the Fells at Huddersfield

Family of Robert & Martha Fell

Family of Robert & Martha Fell at Somerville, Huddersfield

I came across a photograph believed to be of the Fell Family. A count of the people was consistent with Robert Fell and his wife Martha (née Keighley) and their children and the spouses of those children.¹

Robert and Martha had eleven children – all of whom are believed to have outlived their parents. Eight of them married.

Three faces have been pasted (old fashioned scissors and paste!) into the picture* – the two characters directly behind Robert Fell and another standing at the back on the left. * Or more accurately the negative – my print is a single sheet without pastings. (more…)

The Willetts of Colchester, Essex (and Daylight Saving) 2 of 2

I have split my current discussion of the Willetts of Colchester into two posts:

  1. (Previous Post) How I am related (through an adoptive line) to the William Willett of Daylight saving fame. He is my Great Great Uncle, so I need to trace back to his father (also William Willett) and thence to him.
  2. (This Post) Checking out the structure of the family at the beginning of the 19th Century (William Willett,  the elder’s ancestors). Hopefully this will provide a few hooks for those who think they are related to the Colchester Willetts.

This article is fairly long and detailed – a briefer post about Willett Antecedents summarises some of the relationships.
