My Great Aunt.<\/li>\n<li>During the Great War she served (from April 1916) with the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) in France and Flanders.\u00a0 The FANY were originally set up with the rather romantic idea that horsewomen could ride out onto the battlefield and scoop up wounded soldiers and bring them back to safety.\u00a0 In practice they drove heavy motor ambulances.<\/li>\n<li>Her medal index card indicates that she achieved the rank of sergeant.<\/li>\n<li>The London Gazette of <a title=\"London Gazette website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.co.uk\/London\/issue\/30784\/supplement\/8029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 July 1918 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/..\/utility\/willcreatenewwindow.gif\" alt=\"open new window\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/a> gives the following citation:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>His Majesty the KING has been pleased to approve of the award of the Military Medal to the under mentioned Ladies -for distinguished services in the Field, as recorded: \u2014<br \/>\nMiss Sarah Bonnell, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry,<br \/>\nMiss Evelyn Gordon-Brown, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry,<br \/>\nMiss Aileen Maude Faulkner, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry,<br \/>\nMiss Evelyn Faulder, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry,<br \/>\nMiss Nellie Dewhurst, V.A.D., attd. First Aid Nursing Yeomanry.<br \/>\nFor gallantry and conspicuous devotion to duty, when an ammunition dump had been set on fire by enemy bombs and the only available ambulance for the removal of wounded had been destroyed. These ladies subsequently arrived with three ambulances, and, despite the danger arising from various explosions, succeeded in removing all the wounded. Their conduct throughout was splendid. This is disputed by others (such as Sue Light) who claim that 18 Military Medals were awarded in total to the service; five of those during the months of October\/November 1918, and 7 in a separate incident at St. Omer on 26 June 1918. (ref <a title=\"third party website\" href=\"http:\/\/1914-1918.invisionzone.com\/forums\/index.php?showtopic=39175&amp;st=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Great War Forum<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/..\/utility\/willcreatenewwindow.gif\" alt=\"open new window\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Janet Lee infers that these medals were awarded by General Sir Herbert Plumer at Second Army Headquarters. However, the British Journal of Nursing <a title=\"third party website\" href=\"http:\/\/rcnarchive.rcn.org.uk\/data\/VOLUME062-1919\/page347-volume62-24thmay1919.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24 May 1919 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/..\/utility\/willcreatenewwindow.gif\" alt=\"open new window\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/a> records that three of them including Evelyn Faulder received their medals from the King at an investiture on 15th May in the Quadrangle of Buckingham Palace.
